William Hill was a British bookmaker and owner of the company William Hill plc. He was born on 16th April 1903 in Birmingham, England, and died on 26th October 1971 in London, England.

Hill started his career as a clerk at a Birmingham bookmaker's office before setting up his own bookmaking business in 1934. He quickly expanded his business, opening several betting shops in London and the Midlands. In 1954, he merged his business with three other bookmakers to form William Hill Organisation Ltd.

Under Hill's leadership, the company continued to grow, and in 1961, it became the first bookmaker to be listed on the London Stock Exchange. It went on to become one of the largest betting and gaming companies in the world, with operations across the UK and in several other countries.

Hill was known for his sharp business acumen and was credited with modernizing the betting industry in the UK. He was also a philanthropist, supporting various charitable causes, particularly those that focused on helping disadvantaged children.
